Welcome to Follow Through Friday!

It's the inaugural Follow Through Friday! Hip hip hooray!

If you want to stop reading here, then just watch this video. Chick is a bad ass.  It has inspired me and I may watch it everyday for the next 100 days to continue to motivate me.

Alright, onto the #FTF bizz!

I never really made any resolutions for the year so I guess now would be as good a time as any to figure some of those out.  Then, with the help of my lovely co-hosts and you guys, I can maybe stay on track with these bad boys!  I've never been that big on resolutions which is my way of saying I usually make them but haven't ever stuck to them.  But it seems to be a big thing to make "intentions" or find a word to embrace for the year, and those ideas are pretty attractive to me.  Unfortunately, I haven't been too successful at coming up with a word for myself and instead just want to steal everyone else's word.  If I come up with something grand, I'll be sure to let you know.

In no particular order....

(1) Pure Barre 30 in 40 Challenge
Starting on January 1st, I signed up for my studio's new year challenge to take 30 classes in 40 days.  As of today, we are 10 days in and I've taken 6 classes (this includes the I'm signed up for this evening).  I would have taken one Wednesday night but unfortunately couldn't make it there due to horrendous Houston traffic. I love my studio and feel great when I'm consistent about taking class so I know this one will be feasible.  I just to get my nursing schedule figured out!

(2) Run regularly
I don't have an exact meaning figured out yet for what I mean by "regularly" but I do know what it doesn't mean.  For the last 6 months or so, I'll run consistently for a few weeks, run a race, and then stop running for a few weeks.  Then it feels like such a daunting task to go out for that first run after taking so much time off. I don't know why I do it to myself because it is always easier to run when you're in the habit of it.  I've got a 10K coming up on Feb. 8th and I've done this distance enough times now that it doesn't intimidate me.  If I can run 3 times a week between now and then, I'll be content. No real training plan per say, but just getting out there and logging miles consistently.

Photographic evidence of my fastest 5K EVER and my first sub-30 3-miles!! This is after taking a few weeks off from running and it only motivates me more. Plus, it was at my potential new gym.

(3) Take care of myself
This one is so stupid it is embarrassing to admit.  I go to bed more often than I care to admit without brushing my teeth or washing my face or both.  And as a result, I've got zits like a 14 year old and yellow teeth like an 80 year old. HOT. Part of this is vanity for my upcoming wedding, but it's also just time to get my shit together.  I'm 28 years old! It's not like I'm coming home drunk every night and that's why I skip these things. It's generally because I've been blogging/studying/watching TV too late and I'm simply too tired. Well, no more excuses Cait - get it together!

(4) Take care of my house
Speaking of personal hygiene (I really am a clean person!), I need to also start being an adult when it comes to cleaning my home. I wish I had unlimited funds and could hire a housekeeper.  I love to wash dishes (seriously, it's therapeutic) but that's where my Suzie Homemaker skills ends.  Instead, I often neglect little chores for so long that it becomes this overwhelming task to clean my house, which causes me to put it off and then it just gets worse. Again, I'm a clean person! We don't live in a hoarder's house or anything. But I'm pretty sure I should vacuum at least once a week and if I did, then it wouldn't seem so bad.

I'm sure I could find another hundred things to improve on, but then I'd be in the same position as the last 10 years and I'd throw the whole list out the window.  Let's see how I manage on these things before adding anything else into the mix.

Thanksgiving with my beautiful momma! Can't wait to see her this weekend!

Grab a button and link up to share what you're working on Following Through on and don't forget to share on IG and twitter with #FTF!  My mom's coming into town this weekend for my first dress fitting so I'm sure I'll have lots to share if we're friends on social media!

decisions, decisions

THANK YOU for the feedback on my wedding problems yesterday! If you didn't already check it out, I'd love to hear your thoughts on invite etiquette and open bars.

I posed a question to the twitterverse the other evening about Planet Fitness gyms.  I haven't been a member at a gym for a few years now, instead working out at home (mostly running) and taking Pure Barre classes. I know, I still need to write a post on these.  It's coming, one day, I promise!

When I first moved to Houston I joined an expensive boutique gym at the prodding of my roommate. I began by taking Sunday yoga classes with her, which cost $10/week, and eventually realized I should just pay the $49/month to have full access to the place.  But I was locked into a 2 year contract and then moved all the way across Houston before the two years was up.  In case you don't know, Houston is HUGE.  I tried going back a few times but basically just made monthly donations to their fat pockets until my contract ran out. It was still cheaper than canceling early.

However, I'm beginning to see the allure of a joining gym again.  First, I miss using machines and lifting weights. At home, I have two 5-lb weights and B has this contraption where you can change the weight with a click of a button. But this thing starts at 10 lbs (which is pretty much my max) and there is only one of them.  If I can't do both arms at the same time it probably isn't going to happen. Just keeping it real, folks.

Secondly, there is a social aspect to a gym.  It's nice motivation to go there and see people working hard.  When I used to take BodyPump at the Y, you got to know people and if you missed a week then they asked about you.  I like that.  When I don't put in P90X or JM for a few weeks, they don't ask where I've been.  Rude.

Thirdly, my Pure Barre classes don't always fit into my schedule. Especially now that school has started.  Even though my lab got out early at 5:30pm last night, I couldn't make it to the studio by 7:00pm for class due to Houston's crazy traffic.  If I belong to a gym, then on days when I plan for PB but it doesn't work out, that doesn't have to mean skipping a workout all together. Instead I can just head on over to the gym.

And I'm almost embarrassed to mention the other reason I'm considering Planet Fitness. Yes, it's close to my house. Yes, it's open 24-hours most days.  Yes, it's affordable.  But you know what else they have? Free tanning beds for Black Card members.  And you know what pasty lady is getting married in 2 months? Yup, this girl.  I get pretty orange from spray tans (as a few friends can attest to) but tanning beds, despite all their evils, actually turn this pale Irish lass into an almost-bronze beauty.  And I would only do it until the wedding - then no more. I'm not trying to get skin cancer or leathery skin, y'all.

So I did what any normal girl would do.  I took the gym for a test drive.

Lots of #selfiepride going on here. Especially in that last picture when a homegirl walked in as the camera when "click" and totally caught me.  Note to self, turn the phone on silent so the selfies aren't as obvious.

And then when I got home I did the next natural thing.  Ordered new shoes.

I love these shoes but feel like the white is a little in your face with leggings and/or my nearly translucent legs.  Maybe when I have a tan I'll feel differently?

Do you belong to a gym? Have a gym membership story to share? I'd love to hear it before I sign my life away!

Cait

teeth whitening and booty lifting

Didn't think those two things went together, didya?

Well they do because they are both things I need your advice on.

I have noticed that there is a direct correlation between the amount of studying I do and the color of my teeth.  Don't get me wrong - I have very good teeth hygiene.  My momma paid waaay too much money for orthodontia for me to neglect my toofers.  But, I drink a lot of coffee and the occasional soda. Especially with these dang night shifts I keep getting assigned.  And, OH YEAH, I'm getting married in less than 4 months and these pictures will be with us forever! Not to mention they are costing a pretty penny.

Not my mouth, but I wouldn't mind those results!
So I figure if I'm putting all these effort into eating mostly healthy and working out fairly regularly, then I should also put some effort into my teeth.

Tell me! What methods do you use for whitening your teeth?  I'm open to any and all suggestions, from the pinterest-inspired home concoctions to a kit to an in-office sesh.  However, my bank account suggests that I should start on the inexpensive side of the process. The way I see it if I start now which something that is inexpensive and may or may not work, then I have plenty of time to figure out how well it works and then resort to something expensive but immediate closer to the date, assuming my results aren't quite where I'd like them.

So hit me with your best shot! (fiiiire away... gotta love Pat Benatar!)

If you can give me something to do, I'll even post some progress pics along the way.  I know you guys love to see a #transformationTuesday and let's be real, everyone loves to see someone's before because it makes you feel better about yourself.

Now what's this about booty lifting??

Well, it has been pointed out to me rather rudely might I add by my adoring fiancĂ© that my butt isn't quite what it used to be.  I'm lucky that B is an ass-man and he would prefer it err on the side of Kardashian rather than Moss. However, I want a tiny, perky, lifted booty.  Tiny being the key word.  Since working out and losing some weight, my butt has shrank. But now I'm feeling a little Miley-esque and ain't no body got time for that.

For reference, here is the range:
Too big, too flat, and just right: Goldilocks and the quest for the perfect ass

Has anyone out there tried one of those 30-Day Squat challenges... and seen actual results?  Or are there some targeted moves I can do? I love my Pure Barre workouts and they are helping, but not fast enough for me.  When I search this I get crazy results so I want to hear from real people!

Alright, let me hear about your teeth and booty tricks!

something is better than nothing, right?

Today I attempted to do the interval run that Meredith at My Own Little World put on IG yesterday.  I ran outside in the blistering heat twice this week already and thought I would take it easy on myself with this little dreadmill run today.

follow her for some motivating workouts and meals! via

BOY, WAS I WRONG!

don't let this picture fool ya - I was smiling through the pain

For reference, it takes a lot for me to have sweat pouring off of me.  I glisten very easily and that's typically where it stops.  I was sweatier after this indoor treadmill run than I was after either of my outdoor runs this week.

I attempted the first 10 second run at 9.5 (yes, 9.5, I misread her interval speed!) and truly thought this was going to happen:

Mike Running on Treadmill Monsters Inc Mike Wazowski Running on a Treadmill
via

And because clearly Meredith is on another level, here's the workout I actually did.

But hey, at least I had a cheering section!

Who knows how acccurate the treadmill is but for what it's worth:

Calories - 340.5
Time - 29:06
Distance - 2.391 miles

Any other interval training you guys like to do?

day 2 and starting stats

If you're anything like me, you're reading this post from the comfort of your bed where you haven't had to fully open both eyes yet.  At least, trolling Bloglovin from the warmth of my bed is how I like to wake up on a Saturday morning!

As promised, I've got my starting stats below but first you'll have to get through my update for Day 2.

Day 2 Updates

Well Day 2 didn't quite get off to the start that I had hoped for.  I planned on waking up early, getting a run in, studying, yada yada yada.

Instead, I slept in until 10am, skipped my early workout, went to the DMV and then a movie.  But there was (and still is!) a lot of studying!

Okay, on to the food -

10am - egg cup and fiber drink
10:30am - banana and spark
12:30pm - deli turkey, hummus, carrots and celery
2:00pm - movie theater popcorn (very small amount), Think Thin bar
7:00pm - classic turkey club (no cheese!) and sweet potato fries

Probably have averaged around 80 oz of water... much better than Day 1, so I'll take that small victory!

And because I skipped my morning run I was going to do Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred before climbing into bed but instead read almost all the posts on yesterday's wedding link up. Oops!

Starting Stats

When I did the cleanse for the first time in March, I recorded my info on a note in my phone at the beginning and at the end.  For comparison's sake, here you go:

I must have not updated the weight loss because clearly I lost 12 lbs... oops! I think the 7 lbs was during the "cleanse phase".

In the two months since the cleanse, I've basically yo-yo'ed within a 4-lb range.  I've been stuck between 135 and 139 pretty consistently.  I blame a few things: weddings, end of school celebrations, lack of grocery shopping, fast food, inconsistent workouts.  But despite this I'm actually pretty proud that I kept a lid on my weight.  That's the longest I've been at a "healthy" weight since high school probably.  Usually I just get serious about losing, reach a goal, and then it all goes out the window!

Without further ado, here are my stats as of Thursday morning when I started:

Weight 137.4 lb
Left Arm 11
Right Arm 11
Bust 33
Waist 28
Hips 35.5
Left Thigh 23
Right Thigh 23.5
Left Calf 15
Right Calf 15

And here are the before pics:

L-O-V-E LOVE LOVE these shorts from Walmart.  And only $5.  Can't be that with a stick!

Please ignore the dirty mirror. And my sunburn. Apparently 23 minutes in the sun without sunscreen does that to me but the pictures honestly make it MUCH worse! I do NOT match that swimsuit hanging off to the left - PROMISE!!

All in all, pretty consistent from 2 months ago.  By the end of this challenge I would like to be in the 120's (even if it is just 129.9) and have lost 5 inches total.  Since I'm adding in workouts this time around, I think it's possible!

Any suggestions along the way to stay motivated?

xoxo,
YFG

PS - If you made it this far, you're probably reading this while I'm at my first day of clinicals.  Please consider sending me some good nurse vibes!!

Summer is here! (just kidding)

Wait, I don't get summer? This whole accelerated-BSN-in-11-months isn't going to give me a 2 month summa break?  Dang.

Well, let's post some goals up on the ole' blog anyways...

School goals
1. A in every class. I want that 4.0 so badly I can taste it.
2. Get up by 8am every day (M-F), even when B sleeps in til noon.
3. Stop procrastinating. [This post isn't procrastination. I've already been hard at work for 2 hours, folks!]

Life Goals
1. Visit Austin with my future MIL to decide on a rehearsal dinner location.  Sidenote: wedding is in Dripping Springs. Any suggestions on fun places that aren't exclusively BBQ since our Catholic families will be attending on a Friday during Lent?
2. Sign the contract for our caterer (currently in limbo while we decide on rehearsal dinner).
3. Make a clothing donation to Goodwill/clean out closet.
4. Continue to make time for friends/family.
5. Stay on budget! I only have 5 paychecks left (EEK!) and then that's it until I finish school/pass NCLEX/get a job sooo I use mint.com to stay on track and I love it - anyone else?

sample screenshot of my June spending so far

Fitness Goals
1. Attend 4 PB classes - I miss my PB girls!
2. Run 1/week minimum.
3. Sign up for a 5K.
4. Advocare 24 Day Challenge begins again June 23rd.

So this will be my 2nd go around with the Advocare 24 Day Challenge.  I did it for the first time in March and LOVED it.  Eating clean has really pushed me to examine my dietary habits and make some long term changes for the better.  I've got my energy and I feel great.  Last time I couldn't work out during (read about it here) but this time I don't have anything standing in my way.  If you're interested in joining me, check out the program here and comment below or email me.

I've got a ton of clean eating recipes I'll post in the days leading up to the challenge. I'll also share my meal plan so it will be super easy for anyone to follow along!

What are your plans for June? Any goals you'd like to accomplish?  I'd love to hear about them!

xoxo,
YFG

PS - Old Navy is having a 40% off sale on their active line. I bought a pair of leggings about a year ago and liked them just fine but when combined with their prices it makes them amazing! I just ordered some tanks and capris - can't wait to try them out when they get here!

PPS - #flexbreak :)

Random Things

Nursing school and working full-time is no joke.  I'm alive and well, just not spending much time blogging/blog reading these days.  But lucky for you, I've given my self a 15 minute break and rather than eat junk food I am taking this time to blog!

1) I'm joining Holly in the Ab 300 Challenge.  I stated earlier this month I'd be doing the May Meltdown with Ms. Michaels but that hasn't really panned out like I wanted.  If you're interested in the challenge, visit The Petit Athleat!

2) I got this awesome new workout tank but I'm VERY self conscious when I wear it around the neighborhood.  I took it out for a run last week and felt like all the moms were giving me the evil eye through their house windows.  But I also love it a lot so I don't think it will stop me from wearing it.

Super Cala Fraga Tank (clink on picture for link)

3) B and I had our engagement party this past weekend and it was wonderful!  My future SIL (who I love and am so blessed to have in my life) threw it for us as a chance for our families and wedding party to get together.

Future SIL could seriously BE my sister.  And I look pretty amazing in that Kiki La Rue dress :)

Most of the wedding party couldn't make it, but this girl did! Julie is a very good friend of mine who I met through Teach for America when I moved to Houston 5 years ago.  She's seen my relationship with B grow from mere flirtations to what it is today.

There were also shot girls at the bar/restaurant and we got my Grandmother to take quite a few tequila shots.  It was the sort of scene my grandfather would have loved and I felt his presence that night very much.  I'm actually getting weepy just sitting here and typing this (though that could be the lack of sleep + the abundance of Spark in my system) so Lord knows how I'll make it through my wedding.

4) Wrote thank you notes for the gifts we got yesterday on these gorgeous note cards I found at Tar-jay.  Holla!

1 // not online // not online

4) Got my Watermelon Spark in yesterday and it's pretty, pretty, pretty good (Larry David/Curb Your Enthusiasm reference? Anyone? Okay then, watch below.)

5) I told myself I'd reward myself for every A I got on a nursing school test.  Took our first one yesterday and got a solid B.  Not horrible, but I'm disappointed in myself and determined to get an A on the next one, which is tomorrow.

On that note, back to studying. Here's an #ootd from school on Tuesday - sweet test hair, Cait.

Link Ups and Quick Post!

Shout out to all my fellow night owls!
It's May 1st (well, it was until 40 minutes ago... details) and you know what that means -

#4Mchallenge day 1, in the books.  Booyah.

Oh yeah, baby!  I ended up going on an unexpected run yesterday (seriously, I do not run) so I didn't get up early like planned for my girl JM.  Instead, I fit in the 30 Day Shred video tonight between taking two history tests.  [Sidenote: nursing school orientation is tomorrow and classes start Monday.  I am finish up two history prerequisites as we speak.]  I really didn't feel like doing the video but after I started I was so glad that I did.  Funny how exercise works like that, right?

3.24 miles! Still can't believe I did that!

This morning I happened to read Mama Laughlin's post and felt like she was talking right to me.  Yes, this pace is slow.  But it's MY pace. And this is MY fitness journey.  And I'm proud of that 12:07 pace because it is the FURTHER and LONGEST I've ever run.

On to the next link-up... I've been following these ladies for quite some time now (you should too if you aren't already) and I'm excited to finally participate!

button

Alright, here's what the scale said this morning:

I haven't figured out how to rotate it yet, sorry.  And I know, that pedicure has gots to go. Yikes!  But woohoo! Within 10 lbs of my goal weight (125).

When I started the Advocare 24 Day Challenge I was about 150 lbs.  And most of this comes from changing my diet, folks.  As you may recall reading, I broke my hand right before the challenge so I was not working out AT ALL.  Now, I'm adding it back in.  And I want to have a smoking hot body that I am proud of and that can do stuff - like run. And life weights. And #flexbreak!  Hell yes!

Alright, I've got to get back to the books for now.  And to bed soon - gotta get up at 4am for orientation :)

April Showers bring May.... Meltdowns?

Good morning!  And HAPPY TUESDAY! Because Tuesday is almost Wednesday which is halfway through the week and it's kind of like we can round up and say it's Friday, right?  Yes??  Alright, glad we got that settled.

Next up? I got myself a BlogLovin button (as seen to your left and at the bottom of the post).  Pretty darn proud of myself.  But that's not all! I'm also joining my first link up with Rachel at Postcards from Rachel and Northern Belle Diaries to honor my fancy little new button. Be sure to stop by and check it out!

So, Sunday night I stayed up later than I wanted (close to 1am - why do I do this to myself??) but still made time to get up sort of early Monday to work on my new resolution...

I'm vowing to wake up at 5:00am (or close to that) every weekday so I can....
have time to myself
read blogs
post on my blogs/others' blogs
wake up slowly
and...

maybe workout!

It seems that quite of few of you successful bloggin' ladies do this and it works, so I figure it can't hurt to try it. Plus, I'm sick of always running around like a chicken with my head cut off in the mornings because I've snoozed my alarm for 30 minutes an hour. At least.

Alright, let's back up a little bit....

I was dog sitting this weekend (something I do, along with babysitting, to make extra moolah) and it kind of wears me out.  Not the actual dogsitting, but I stay overnight there and it's not in my 'hood so I a) miss my man, b) miss my pups, and c) had to bring a shit ton of stuff with me so I could work out and eat clean.  Seriously, a huge ol' bag of Spark/Magic Bullet blender/gluten-free wraps/hummus/Think Thin bars/veggies/fruit/water bottles.  You get the picture.

But Sophie and Izzie are easy to take care of and great dogs. Plus it's good money.  I'll chalk that up as a win!

Sophie (left) and Izzie (right). Super sweet and cuddly pups!
Saturday I built put together a buffet for our dining room. I've been on the hunt for a piece of furniture for our dinner room for a while since we just have a table and chairs in there and I've been storing a lot of crap there since I moved in last summer.  I finally found what I wanted at Target (love that place!) but you know that no trip to Target is ever that easy! I talked about it in Friday's post but needless to say, I came home with way more than just the buffet.

I get a real satisfaction from putting something together, so while I could have waited until B was home, I tackled it on my own.  I'm very impressed with the quality of the piece and now I'm just perusing Pintrest to figure out how I want to style it.  Here it is, currently naked, in our dining room.

It's close to the table now, but we'll take the leaf out and then everything will be A-Okay!

With the bookcase built, I went to our staff picnic.  It's a really fun event every year but Mother Nature got a little cray over the weekend so we left early. The only picture I have is this one of my coworker's adorable daughter, Ellie.

The sun never sets on a badass.

And here's what I dealt with on my 90 minute drive across Houston - it was only 24 miles people! Shit got crazy and I'm thankful that my mom's little Hybrid Camry was a beast through all the flooded areas! I keeked about how HANGRY I was so... check that out too!

This is the only picture that I took that came out.  But if you want to see some crazy pics/videos, check out grrfeisty's blog - she and her fiance got stranded a mile from home with 2 dogs and had to walk!

Lastly, I'm participating in the May Meltdown with Ms. Michaels starting TOMORROW (May 1st)!

The challenge is to workout with Jillian Michaels everyday for the month of May (hey, that rhymes!).  Mrs. Elle Noel and some other wonderful bloggers (Kate, Kara & Kristie, Meredith, and Kassie) came up with this challenge and I'm super pumped about it. I recently instagrammed and blogged about how I just got the JM 30 Day Shred and I've done it a few times but not daily.  So that's the JM torture I'll be enduring.  Hopefully I can get a post up Wednesday with some measurements and pre-pictures.

Have a great day! Leave my some blog love or follow me on BlogLovin!

30 Day Shred (and how I got here)

I started the Jillian Michaels' 30 Day Shred tonight.

I'm already sore.

A little back story first. On March 10th, I got in a pretty bad car accident. It was the first weekend of spring break (I'm a teacher) and I was visiting my family in Austin. My brother was originally supposed to get married on Saturday, March 9th but it was called off in January. Being that it was the wedding date and I had to go to Austin for some wedding meetings of my own that week, I drove in that day for moral support. I had dinner with my fam and then my brother was heading out to a friend's house so I went along. Long story short, I got in a bad wreck at 2am in the pouring rain when I was driving back to my mom's house. I thank God every single day that no one was seriously injured. I broke my left hand and ended up having to get a cast.

My wrecked Cruze.  6 weeks later and STILL in the shop.
That cast came off 4 days ago. My hand is super gnarly but that's another post when I can actually say that my hand is useful again. For now, it's a mess of dry skin, swollen bruises and a wonky ring finger.  Sweet.
About 12 hours after the wreck.  My best friend took the ER's splint off so she could remove my acrylic nails.  Best. Friend. Ever. Send the girl a freakin' award.
Prior to breaking my hand, I was doing Pure Barre around 5 times per week and had just starting going to CrossFit. Turns out, you can't do either of those things with a broken hand. I don't have a regular gym membership so I felt stuck. I'd been toying with trying to run again, but was told to avoid that with my hand because it would make the swelling worse.  Not to mention the smell it would create.  Gag.  Plus, I'd lost about 10 lbs from working out and didn't want to lose that progress. At this point, I had been following pretty closely while Mama Laughlin and Skinny Meg did the Advocare Cleanse, which then turned into the 24 Day Challenge.
My sweet package for the 24 Day Challenge. Worth every motherloving penny.
Since I couldn't work out, I decided to attack my terrible diet.  I bought the entire 24 Day Challenge and figured I didn't have anything to lose. Except maybe $200. But for that price, I felt pretty committed to the program.  I revamped my eating habits, went 99% clean (there may have been a bachelorette party in there where I broke every cleanse rule in the book) and really loved the results I got. [Confession: I ate Chick-Fil-A four nights in a row right before starting the cleanse.  I really wanted to go out with a bang.]

Me with the Bachelorette, grrfeisty!

Loooong story is... I worked out today for the first time in almost 6 weeks.  I did the Jillian Michaels: 30 Day Shred at level one.  Overall, I was pleased with the program.  The 20 minutes went by quickly and I already feel sore.  Some of the stuff was still hard with my left hand - pushups didn't really work out and my wrist got sore fast from the weights.  All I've got are 5 lb-ers so starting with 2 or 3 lbs probs would have been smarter.  Oh well - live and learn.
Pre JM 30 Day Shred.
Post Shred #flexbreak

I'm going to attempt to get up before work to complete Day 2.  Usually my bed wins out so we'll see.

YFG
